The Leas Cliff Lift

Opened in 1886 by the 'Folkestone Pier and Lift Company', the cliff lift is one of only three water balanced lifts of its kind still in operation today. If it wasn't for the council buying the structure for 1 shilling in the 1960's, and restoring the carriages then we would not have this unique attraction to marvel at to this day. Offering spectacular views of the French coast and Leas garden's it is a must for anyone visiting the area.

Canterbury

The city of Canterbury is one of the most beautiful cities not just in Kent but in all England.
The town centre itself consists of many cobbled winding streets brimming with boutiques and shops selling every possible produce from locally made fudge to exotic furniture.

There are a number of excellent places to visit in this city including the amazing Cathedral built in 597 AD by St Augustine. Guided tours are available and are both interesting and informative.

Another of Canterbury's more unusual places is the Canterbury Tales , a fun look at the short stories that made Geoffrey Chaucer and Kent famous.

Sandgate and Hythe

Sandgate a quaint little town 5 minutes from the hotel. Famed for its antique shops and beach.

Hythe is a little further along the coast with its range of individual shops and a twice weekly brik a brak market. Cutting the town in half is the Royal Military Canal built to stop Napoleon from invading, however nowadays it serves a far quieter occupation taking small row boats lazily up and down through the beautiful scenery.

Another local treasure is the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch District Light Railway, one of only a few of these miniature steam train rides still running.
